PREDATOR 4550 Watt Open-Frame Inverter Generator

I purchased the Harbor Freight Predator 4550 open-frame inverter generator after experiencing multiple extended power outages in a rural setting. This review is based on real-world home backup use, not promotional testing.

I found the Predator 4550-watt open-frame inverter generator to be a wise choice. Inverter generators cost more than conventional generators, but this distinction is important when purchasing backup power. Inverters produce clean, stable power (pure sine wave) that is safe for laptops, phones, and modern TVs, whereas conventional generators produce more irregular power that can damage sensitive electronics and are better suited for heavy-duty tools or large, non-sensitive appliances. To expand usable outlets from the generator, I paired it with a power block/splitter, which handled the load without overheating.

The Predator 4550 is capable of running a couple of lamps, my refrigerator, microwave, computer, router, and even a small electric radiant heater. It starts very easily and can run for up to 12 hours on a full tank of gas.

My only regret was not purchasing the optional wheel kit, which would make the unit easier to move around. Fortunately, that’s something I can order and add later. Overall, I would recommend the Predator 4550 to anyone looking for a dependable and affordable backup power option.

Final Verdict: A great product at a fair price that should provide years of reliable service.
